What to Put on a Teacher Classroom Wishlist
New teachers often ask what is fair to put on a classroom wishlist. The honest answer: anything that directly serves students, that you would otherwise buy yourself, and that you can explain in one sentence. Here is a way to organize your thinking.

The four categories worth using
- Consumables — the things that disappear: pencils, glue sticks, tissues, markers, sticky notes, hand sanitizer, snacks for students who arrive hungry.
- Learning tools — items tied to instruction: leveled readers, math manipulatives, timers, headphones, whiteboards, science station materials.
- Comfort and regulation — flexible seating, lamps, fidget tools, a calm corner basket, noise-reducing headphones.
- Celebration and community — sticker sheets, birthday pencils, book prizes, materials for a class project or a family night.
What to lead with
Put consumables at the top. They are inexpensive, immediately useful, and easy for a supporter to say yes to. A first-time giver who buys a pack of markers is far more likely to come back for a thirty-dollar item later.
What to be careful with
Anything a student could be identified by should stay off a public page. Do not list 'winter coat, size 6, for a student who needs one.' Describe the need generally, and handle specifics privately through your school.
Also check your district policy before requesting technology, furniture, or anything that may need to be inventoried or asset-tagged.
The 'explain it in a sentence' test
If you cannot say in one sentence how an item helps students, it probably does not belong on the list yet. This is not about deserving — it is about making the request easy to say yes to.
Keep a private running list
Between refreshes, keep a note on your phone of everything you reach for and cannot find. When it is time to update your page, you will be writing from what actually happened in your room instead of from a generic supply list.
